ANOTHER OF JOHN FARRAR'S VIRTUAL CITIES
As a travel photographer I have been very lucky and have visited some of the worlds most wonderful cities. Dresden is one such city and it should definitely be on every traveller's 'Must Visit' list. I didn't really have enough time to take in all that this delightful place has to offer as I was only there for two days but I can tell you now that I loved every moment . The high spot for me was to see and photograph the newly rebuilt Frauenkirche. This magnificent church, which was said to be the finest baroque church in Germany, dominated the skyline of Dresden since 1734 and is clearly seen in Canaletto's famous view across the river Elbe. Tragically in February 1945 it became a victim of the second world war and after days of continuous bombing it lay in ruins. Sadly it remained that way throughout the entire Russian occupation of East Germany. Since then however and funded entirely by voluntary donations it has been rebuilt and restored to its former glory. The outer construction of the church building was completed in July 2004, (two years before the target set in 1990) and the Consecration is scheduled to take place on October 30th 2005. I am determined to return to Dresden as soon as I can. I hope you enjoy my first impressions and that you make every effort to visit this beautiful city for yourself. |
